What if it was a 914 successor with the same body? Behind the front seats have a transverse I-4 and transaxle canted backwards to make a large parcel shelf. Or perhaps if Porsche went bonkers and make a V-4 with half of the 928 engine and mounted that longitudinal.

I like how it looks, but I think it was because the average guy thought the 914 was pretty damn ugly, and it had a beetle engine.

And the last company to make a V-4 was Saab back in the day, Porsche already knew that a V-4 was a bad idea.

The thing is, there is a 914 successor. It’s called the Boxster. It’s even more of a spiritual successor to the 914 now because it has a 4-cylinder.

I think the Boxster fills those shoes, especially with the new H4.

I’d really like to see a new 924/944/968 from Porsche. Just give it the 2.0T from the base 718 (300hp). Essentially a luxury BRZ with enough power to hold its own against The V8 pony cars (especially with the PDK).

Also, wouldnt it be a slant-4 not a V4, like with the 944? Still derived from a V8, but cut longitudinally.

The V4 is not a bad engine configuration, it just costs more to make than a I4. They’ve been used in motorcycles for a long time because of the compactness and low vibration levels.

Also, the 2014 Porsche 919 used at LeMans has a V4!

I also found this video of a new V4 motorcycle engine under development. It’s basically a pushrod V8 cut in half. Neat!
